Installing Net-Print Printers Under MacOS X version 10.2

Notes:

 
  • These instructions work only with MacOS X version 10.2 (also known as Jaguar).

    CIT strongly recommends you upgrade to OS X version 10.3
 
 
  • Please note that this printing method will not prompt you for your NetID and password - you will have to explicitly authenticate by running Kerberos from the applications tray and clicking Get Tickets...

    If Kerberos authentication fails, the error message "Failed to print job" will briefly be flashed on the screen. If all goes well, Printing succeeded will be flashed.

You will need to complete two steps: installing the software and adding the printer. You can add as many printers as you like (but you only install the software once).

Installing the "npklprng" software:

1. Download npklprng.dmg.sit. (simply click on this link and accept the download). On most computers it will automatically decompress and open a volume called npklprng. Inside that volume is the installer, which is called npklprng.pkg, as shown below. (If the file does not automatically decompress, double-click on it.)

2. Double-click the npklprng.pkg file to begin the installation.

3. The first screen will welcome you to the installer. Click Continue.

4. On the next screen, select the volume where you want the installer installed. This is often called Macintosh HD, but you may have renamed yours. Click once on the desired volume then click Continue.

5. The next screen simply states that you will do an "Easy Install." Click Install.

6. Depending on how your computer is configured, you may be asked for your password. Note that this is the password for your Macintosh, not the password you use with Kerberos (with your NetID).

7. The installer will tell you that you will need to restart your computer when the installation is done. Click Continue Installation (unless you need to save information in some other application -- if that's the case, cancel out of the installer, finish your work in the other application, then start again at step #2 above.

8. When the installation is complete you will see a screen like the one below. Click Restart to complete the installation.

Configure Net-Print printers:

    Printer manufacturers make frequent changes to their websites. If you try to follow the directions below and discover that they are no longer accurate, please let us know.

  1. Use the Printer Information page to decide which printer(s) you want to have available to you. Make a note of the exact Queue Name and Printer Model.
  2. Follow the steps below for the manufacturer of the printer you have chosen:

For Xerox printers:

  1. Go to http://www.office.xerox.com/perl-bin/opb_drivers.pl

  2. Select your printer model from the dropdown list, then select the platform (MAC OS X) and desired files (Drivers) as shown above.
  3. Click on go to downloads.

  4. Download the Xerox PPD Installer.
  5. Double-click on the installer (once it has downloaded), and follow the on-screen instructions.
 

For Lexmark printers:

  1. Go to http://www.lexmark.com/US/us_home.html. 
  2. Click Drivers & Downloads. 
  3. Click Monochrome Laser or Color Laser (depending on which kind you have chosen to set up).
  4. Click on your printer model.
  5. Under Search Downloads, leave the search input empty and click the green arrow.

  6. In the Filter Your Results By section, select MAC OS 10.3, Driver, and English (as shown below), then click Update.

  7. Download the resulting disk image (.dmg file) by clicking on Download Now on the same line as the driver name.

  8. Double-click on the installer (once it has downloaded), and follow the on-screen instructions.
 

For HP printers:

  1. Go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html.
  2. Select Download drivers and software, enter your printer model, then click on the double arrows.

  3. If more than one product matches your search, click on the exact printer model from the resulting list (for example, HP LaserJet 8100n printer). If you're not sure, the product number followed by the letter "n" is a good guess.
  4. Click on MAC OS X.

  5. Under Driver, click the download button.

  6. Double-click on the installer (once it has downloaded), and follow the on-screen instructions.
  1. From any application which is capable of printing (for example, Internet Explorer), click the Print icon, then select Edit Printer List... from the Printer list as shown below. 

    This will start Print Center. (Or you can start Print Center from Applications/Utilities)

  2. In Print Center, Option Click on Add Printer....  It's very important that you hold the Option key down while you click!


  3. After a short delay, a dialog box will open. Select Advanced from the uppermost dropdown list.
    (If you don't see Advanced on the list, you probably didn't hold down the Option key in step #4.)


  4. Complete the remaining fields as follows:

    followed by the exact Queue Name
    (for example. klpr://net-print.cit.cornell.edu/k-tjaden1).  
    NOTE    : be sure to include "k-" just before the Queue Name.

  5. Click Add.
  6. In the Print Center menu, select Quit Print Center.

Now the Net-Print printer you've set up will be available to you whenever you choose Print from any application, as shown below:
